The Gap

Anne Hospers

There’s a very important lesson I’ve learnt this year and I want to share it with you. The lesson can be introduced in one sentence “If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.” – Lemony Snicket.

I was once nicknamed ‘Quote Girl’, by a classmate from the Arts Academy because I like to collect Pinterest wisdom and share those little titbits when the situation calls for it. Now, that I am finishing up my final year at Saxion, I can really understand Snicket’s advice. Growing up in a performance-orientated society, I have the urge to constantly better myself and try things that make me uncomfortable. But I often think a lot about doing something without actually doing it. As if tomorrow, I will feel more up to it; but this is rarely ever the case.

During both my exchange minor assignments at the Arts Academy in Rotterdam as well as during my independent graduation project, a lot of uncertainty was involved and nearly everything was new. I became hesitant to make and to write; teachers noticed this. At the end of the day, our ability will only increase when we give things a go, this is when we close the gap between where we are and where we want to be.

At the Arts Academy especially, I was surrounded by people who had been making art for three years and I was just getting started. I felt like a real beginner among young professionals. I was very hesitant to get the ball rolling. In the end I did make something, it was no-where near as good as what others had made. But I was closing my gap, between where I wanted to be and where I was. Taking little steps forward instead of standing still, because I didn’t want to be waiting for the rest of my life, this was as ready as I was ever going to be. I was on my way.

Below is a link to a beautifully designed video on the topic of things no-body tells beginners; it contains a very strong message about THE GAP by Ira Glass.
